Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, a\u00a0performance audit was conducted by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) on the degradation of the Shipra River.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Location:<\/strong> The Shipra River (also known as the Kshipra) is a river in Madhya Pradesh.<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

2. Type:<\/strong> It is a perennial\u00a0river<\/span>\u00a0and is considered as sacred as the\u00a0Ganga River\u00a0by the\u00a0Hindus.<\/p>\n

3. Origin:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

a) The Shipra River originates in the\u00a0Vindhya Range\u00a0<\/span>from a hill called\u00a0Kakri-Tekdi,<\/span> situated approximately\u00a011 kilometers north of Ujjain<\/span>\u00a0in\u00a0Madhya Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n

b) This perennial river flows across the Malwa Plateau\u00a0<\/span>and eventually joins the\u00a0Chambal River.<\/span><\/p>\n

c) Kahn and Gambhir<\/span> are its major tributaries.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Religious Significance<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

a) According to ancient Hindu texts<\/span> (the Puranas<\/span>), the Shipra River is believed to have sprung from the heart of Varaha<\/span>, an incarnation of\u00a0Lord Vishnu\u00a0<\/span>in the form of a boar.<\/p>\n

b) Along the banks of the Shipra lies the ashram (hermitage)\u00a0of\u00a0Sage Sandipani,<\/span> where Lord Krishna<\/span>, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, received his education.<\/p>\n

c) The holy city of Ujjain<\/span>, situated on the right bank of the Shipra, hosts the famous Kumbha Mela <\/span>(Sinhastha fair). Pilgrims gather on the city\u2019s elaborate riverside ghats to celebrate the river goddess<\/span> Kshipra<\/span>.<\/p>\n

d) The Shipra River also finds mention in Buddhist and Jain texts.<\/span><\/p>\n
