There has been warming of winter season across India, affecting every region during this season.<\/p>\n<p>a) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Manipur<\/span>\u00a0has witnessed the most significant change in average winter temperature since 1970, with an increase of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2.3\u00b0C<\/span><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Delhi\u00a0<\/span>experienced the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">smallest change in average winter temperature,<\/span> with only\u00a0<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">0.2\u00b0C difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Winter<\/span> is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">fastest warming season<\/span> for 12 out of the 34 States and territories. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Autumn<\/span> was the fastest warming season in<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> 13 regions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Pattern during the winter:<\/strong> There were significant differences in the pattern of temperature changes during the winter.<\/p>\n<p>a) The southern part of the country had <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u201cstrong\u201d warming<\/span> in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">December and January. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>b) Sikkim (2.4 degrees Celsius) and Manipur (2.1 degrees Celsius) had the largest changes in temperature in December and January, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>c) The northern part of the country had weaker warming and even cooling during <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">December and January.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>d) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Delhi<\/span> had the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lowest rates<\/span> during this period<\/p>\n<p>e) Among the States, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ladakh and Uttar Pradesh<\/span> had the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lowest warming rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Pattern during January-February:<\/strong> The pattern changes dramatically between January and February.<\/p>\n<p>a) In <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">February,<\/span> all regions experienced warming, with particularly significant increases in areas that had previously shown cooling or minimal warming.<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jammu and Kashmir<\/span> had the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">highest warming,<\/span> while <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Telangana<\/span> had the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lowest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>c) The contrast between January trends (cooling or slight warming) and February (strong warming) means that regions in northern India now have the potential for abrupt transitions from cool winter-like temperatures to much warmer conditions traditionally observed in March.<\/p>\n<p>d) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rajasthan<\/span> has<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> highest warming rates<\/span> where the warming in February was 2.6 degrees Celsius higher than in January.<\/p>\n<p>e) A total of nine States and Union Territories showed a January-February difference of more than 2 degrees Celsius: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rajasthan, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, and Uttarakhand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>5. <strong>Reason for the change:<\/strong> Warming of winter in South India and the lack of rainfall in the North in winter is due to an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">aberration in the pattern of Western Disturbances<\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">jet stream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/global-warming-will-cause-conditions-beyond-human-tolerance-this-will-impact-homes-too\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global warming<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source-This post on Global warming&#8217;s Impact on climate is based on the article \u201cSpring season \u2018disappearing\u2019 in many States, Shows Study\u201d published in \u201cThe Hindu\u201d on 19th March 2024.
