Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Vietnam urges respect for international law after China sets a baseline in the Gulf of Tonkin<\/span>.
\nThis action sparks concerns due to overlapping claims in the South China Sea. However, historically, both countries have maintained friendly relations in the Gulf of Tonkin<\/span>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Baselines<\/strong><\/p>\n

Baselines are imaginary lines<\/span> along the coast used to measure the extent of a country’s territorial sea<\/span> and other maritime zones<\/span>, like territorial waters and exclusive economic zones.<\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

About Gulf of Tonkin<\/h2>\n

1. Location<\/strong>– It is a shallow, crescent-shaped body of water located in the northwest part of the<\/span> South China Sea<\/a>. It is known as \u201cBeibu Gulf\u201d in Chinese<\/span> and \u201cBac Bo Gulf\u201d in Vietnamese<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Borders<\/strong>– The gulf is bordered by the northern coast of Vietnam to the west and<\/span> northwest<\/span>, China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to the north<\/span>, and the Leizhou Peninsula<\/span> and Hainan Island to the east<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Rivers that drain into it<\/strong>– The Gulf of Tonkin receives water from multiple rivers, primarily the Red River (referred to as the Yuan River in Chinese)<\/span>, along with several smaller rivers.<\/p>\n

4. Connection<\/strong>– It connects to the South China Sea through its southern mouth and the Hainan Strait (Qiongzhou Strait) to the northeast<\/span>.<\/p>\n

5. Major Ports<\/strong>– In Northern Vietnam<\/span>, the primary ports along the gulf are Haiphong and Ben Thuy<\/span>. In China, <\/span>the major port is Beihai (Pakhoi)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

6. Historical incident<\/strong>– The Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964<\/span> increased U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War.<\/p>\n
