Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Buguns, a major tribe living near Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a> in Arunachal Pradesh, have generously donated 1,470 hectares of land to conserve the Bugun Liocichla bird.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nBugun Liocichla (Liocichla bugunorum) is a bird species.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Official recognition<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was first spotted in 1995 in Arunachal Pradesh. However, the bird was officially documented in 2006<\/span> after astrophysicist Ramana Athreya discovered it in Arunachal Pradesh’s Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary<\/a>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conservation Status<\/strong><\/td>\nIUCN<\/strong>: Critically Endangered<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is primarily observed in specific areas within Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary and Braiduah village under the Singchung subdivision of Arunachal Pradesh. There are only 14-20 of these birds in the state<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> This bird is a small babbler, measuring just 20 cm, with olive-grey feathers<\/span> and a black cap<\/span>.
\n2.<\/strong> It is exclusively found in the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary<\/span> and nowhere else in the world.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Conservation efforts<\/strong><\/td>\nThe Arunachal Pradesh government officially declared Braiduah Community Reserve protected<\/span> under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972<\/a>. The reserve is situated adjacent to the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Significance<\/strong><\/td>\nIt was the first bird discovered since India\u2019s Independence<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

1. Origin in India <\/strong>– The Buguns migrated from Tibet through East Kameng, Arunachal Pradesh.<\/p>\n

2. Livelihood & Habitat:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> Their daily lives are deeply connected to their environment<\/span>.
\nb.<\/strong> Similar to other Indo-Mongoloid tribes in Arunachal Pradesh, the Buguns, also construct their homes using bamboo<\/span>.
\nc. <\/strong>The Buguns are known for their hard work in farming and their skill in extracting oil from a local wood species called Chiblem<\/span>, which is found in the forests.<\/p>\n

3. Lifestyle:
\na. <\/strong>They have separate borders with neighboring tribes and speak a distinct language called Khowa.<\/span>
\nb.<\/strong> They have their own decision-making body called Nimiang<\/span>, which oversees the community’s affairs.
\nc.<\/strong> Buguns tend to practice endogamy<\/span> by marrying individuals within their own community.<\/p>\n

4. Festival<\/strong>– The Bugun people celebrate their annual festival<\/span> known as “Pham-Kho<\/span>.”<\/p>\n
