{"id":28796,"date":"2018-10-24T14:53:22","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T09:23:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28796"},"modified":"2018-10-24T14:53:22","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T09:23:22","slug":"pollution-curbs-monsoons-cleansing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/pollution-curbs-monsoons-cleansing\/","title":{"rendered":"Pollution curbs monsoon\u2019s cleansing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-life\/pollution-curbs-monsoons-cleansing\/article24176674.ece\">Pollution curbs monsoon\u2019s cleansing<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>News:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The study published in the Science Magazine founds that increased pollution particularly from coal burning have potentially weaken ability of monsoon.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Important Facts:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>The monsoon plays a critical role in flushing out pollutants over the Asia region.<\/li>\n<li>Researcher of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry from Germany performed atmospheric chemistry measurements by aircraft in a campaign called the \u201cOxidation Mechanism Observations\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Key finding of the campaign.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The researchers measured the summer monsoon outflow in the upper troposphere between the Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean.<\/li>\n<li>The monsoon sustained a \u201cremarkably efficient\u201d cleansing mechanism in which contaminants are rapidly oxidized and deposited on the Earth\u2019s surface.<\/li>\n<li>Some pollutants were lifted above the monsoon clouds.<\/li>\n<li>In winter, when atmospheric moisture is low fumes from unburnt particles it get disperse toward the Indian Ocean leading to vast pollution haze.<\/li>\n<li>However what happened to unburnt particles in summer is still unknown.<\/li>\n<li>Pollution particles can cool the sea surface temperature mostly in winter.<\/li>\n<li>It was found that when circulation reverses in summer the cooler sea surface evaporates less which can reduce the moisture flux leading to weaken the monsoon.<\/li>\n<li>The scientist also pointed out that the monsoon system may be flushing out pollutants but there was uncertainty over this effects the monsoon.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>The \u201celevated-heat-pump\u201d effect<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>This effect has boost the seasonal heating of the Tibetan Plateau.<\/li>\n<li>The effect result in increasing warming in the upper troposphere during late spring and early summer.<\/li>\n<li>Spurring has enhanced monsoon rainfall over northern India during June and July.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Effects on India cities:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>The India Meteorological Department forecast a 3% dip in total amount of the summer monsoon rains this year.<\/li>\n<li>Pollution levels especially in north India\u2019s Gangetic plane shoot up in winter.<\/li>\n<li>The cities have witness increase in air pollution during summer seasons.<\/li>\n<li>Delhi, Gurugram and several parts of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan are currently face huge dust haze.<\/li>\n<li>The air pollution have put the air quality levels to the \u2018severe\u2019 category on the air quality index.<\/li>\n<li>Indian rainfall is enhanced in spring due to increased loading of black carbon.<\/li>\n<li>But the monsoon may subsequently weaken through increased cloudiness and surface cooling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pollution curbs monsoon\u2019s cleansing News: The study published in the Science Magazine founds that increased pollution particularly from coal burning have potentially weaken ability of monsoon.
