People throw these balls at each other during Holi, and they break upon impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method of Making<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Boiling of Lac in water<\/strong>&#8211; Local artisans explain that crafting Gulaal Gotas begins with <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">boiling lac in water to soften it<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Mixing of colours<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Once the lac is shaped, color is mixed in<\/span>, starting with red, yellow, and green, which can be combined to create additional colors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Carved in to spherical shape<\/strong>&#8211; Once processed, artisans <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">heat the lac<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">use a blower called &#8220;phunkni&#8221; to blow it into spherical shapes<\/span>. Afterward, the balls are filled with gulaal and sealed with lac.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>&#8211; Lac is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">resinous substance<\/span> produced by specific insects and is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">also utilized in bangle making<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Where does the raw material for Gulaal Gota come from?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Lac is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">sourced from Chhattisgarh<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jharkhand<\/span>, where the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">female scale insect serves as one of the primary sources<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> According to the Chhattisgarh State Skill Development Authority\u2019s website, approximately 300,000 insects are killed to produce 1 kg of lac resin. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lac insects also provide resin, lac<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dye<\/span>, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">lac wax<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>How did Gulaal Gotas become a tradition in Jaipur?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Muslim lac artisans, known as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Manihaars, exclusively craft Gulaal Gotas in Jaipur<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ancestors of the Manihaars were shepherds<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">horse traders from Afghanistan<\/span>. They settled in Bagru, near Jaipur, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">learned lac-making from Hindu lac makers, known as Lakhere.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jaipur, founded in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II<\/span>, a patron of the arts, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">has a lane in Tripoliya Bazaar named<\/span> &#8220;Manihaaron ka Raasta&#8221; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dedicated to the Manihaar community<\/span>.
