It is a<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> major seamount<\/span> in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">central Indian Ocean Basin.<\/span> It is located about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">3,000 km away from India\u2019s coast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. It reaches up to about 1,200 meters, rising from an oceanic depth of around 4,800 meters.<\/p>\n<p>3. It is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rich in deposits<\/span> of cobalt, nickel, manganese and copper.<\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Laws related to extraction:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) For doing extraction in this region, countries must apply first for an <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">exploration licence to the ISBA.<\/span> These rights to extraction are applied to areas that are part of the open ocean.<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #333333;\">Open ocean means<\/span> ocean (including air, surface and seabed) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">where no countries can claim sovereignty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>c) Around 60% of the world\u2019s seas are open ocean and believed to be rich in a variety of mineral. However, the costs and challenges of extraction are prohibitive.<\/p>\n<p>d) Currently, no country has commercially extracted resources from open oceans.<\/p>\n<p>e) <strong>Exclusive rights:<\/strong> Countries have exclusive rights up to 200 nautical miles, and its underlying sea-bed from their borders.<\/p>\n<p>Note:\u00a0 The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf<\/span> is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UNCLOS-linked body.<\/span> It decides on the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">limits of a country\u2019s continental shelf.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About ISA<\/h2>\n<p>1. <strong>About:<\/strong> The International Seabed Authority (ISA) is an<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> autonomous international organization.<\/span> It was established under the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)<\/span> and the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (1994 Agreement).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. <strong>Headquater:<\/strong> ISA headquarters is in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Kingston, Jamaica.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Members:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">All States Parties to UNCLOS are members of ISA<\/span>.
