{"id":28866,"date":"2018-10-24T15:18:37","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T09:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=28866"},"modified":"2018-10-24T15:18:37","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T09:48:37","slug":"comprehensive-screening-for-newborns-in-kerala-soon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/comprehensive-screening-for-newborns-in-kerala-soon\/","title":{"rendered":"Comprehensive screening for newborns in Kerala soon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Comprehensive screening for newborns in Kerala soon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>News:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Kerala is set to introduce Comprehensive Newborn Screening (CNS) programme<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong><u>Important Facts:<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><u>Present Initiatives:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Newborns are screened in public sector facilities for inherent metabolic disorders (blood test) and hearing deficit (OAE- Oto Acoustic Emissions test).<\/li>\n<li>Hridyam programme introduced- The programme aims at early detection and management of congenital heart diseases<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><u>Issues with current programmes:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Scattered, not comprehensive<\/li>\n<li>No mechanism to document or track infants in need of continuous follow-up treatment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><u>Objectives of CNS Programme:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>To assess newborns in public sector health facilities for birth abnormalities and critical congenital illnesses within 48 hours of birth<\/li>\n<li>To improve the quality of survival of these babies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><u>Benefits of the programme:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>Early identification and management of all deficits in infants<\/li>\n<li>Help in reducing State\u2019s burden of disabilities<\/li>\n<li>Help in reducing infant mortality rate (IMR)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><u>Details of the programme:<\/u><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>CNS to converge all newborn screening programmes on a web-based platform. It will have a unified reporting system and link-ups with District Early Intervention Centres (DEICs)<\/li>\n<li>Newborns to be assessed under 4 domains:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>a) Visible birth defects,<\/p>\n<p>b) Functional defects (hearing issues, congenital cataracts, heart diseases)<\/p>\n<p>c) Metabolic disorders<\/p>\n<p>d) Neuro-development issues<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Android app developed for visible birth defect reporting and documentation at all delivery points.
