First anti-caste movement:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> The Vaikom Satyagraha in Travancore, now part of Kerala, is recognized as the first anti-caste movement.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> This campaign<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> aimed to challenge the caste system<\/span> by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">opposing restrictions that barred students from depressed classes<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">untouchables from entering the temple<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Origin<\/strong>&#8211; The movement <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">began<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">centered around Vaikom, which was part of the princely state of Travancore<\/span>, near the Mahadev temple in the Kottayam district of Kerala during 1924-1925.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f5f5;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Background of Vaikom Satyagraha<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> During the AICC (All India Congress Committee) meeting in Kakinada in 1923, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">T. K. Madhavan,<\/span> alongside <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sardar Panikkar<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">KP Kesava Menon<\/span>, presented a petition to the Travancore legislative council.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The petition advocated for granting the right to temple entry and worship of gods to all members of society, regardless of caste, creed, or community.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>3. Beginning of the Movement<\/strong>&#8211; It was launched on 30th March 1924.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Prominent Satyagrahis<\/strong>&#8211; Kunjappy, Venniyll Govinda Panicker, and Bahuleyan<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Support to the movement:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Periyar&#8217; E.V. Ramasamy<\/span> was asked to lead the campaign.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> Sikhs from Punjab, known as Akalis, supported by opening a community kitchen (langar) for the volunteers.<br \/>\n<strong>c.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Chattampi Swamikal<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sree Narayana Guru<\/span> supported the movement.<br \/>\n<strong>d.<\/strong> Mahatma Gandhi arrived at Vaikom in March 1925 to negotiate a compromise and resolve the issue definitively.<\/p>\n<h2>Significance of Vaikom Satyagraha<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The movement <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">set the stage for the significant Temple Entry Proclamation (1936)<\/span> by the Maharaja of Travancore, which abolished the longstanding prohibition on marginalized castes entering temples in Travancore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The Vaikom Satyagraha was a <span style=\"color: #333333;\">testing ground for the Gandhian principles of Satyagraha<\/span>.
