Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The genetic profiling of around 400 captive elephants in Kerela will start soon. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is conducting the profiling to include the elephants’ information in a national database-Gaja Suchana<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
Genetic profiling<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. About<\/strong>– Genetic profiling, or genetic testing, involves examining an individual’s DNA to detect variations<\/span> or mutations linked to traits, diseases<\/span>, or conditions<\/span>.<\/p>\n

2. Significance<\/strong>– This analysis offers insight into individual genetic composition and serves multiple purposes, including assessing disease susceptibility, tracing ancestry, and informing personalized medical care.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Genetic profiling of Captive elephants in Kerela<\/h2>\n

1. Reason for genetic profiling<\/strong>– Kerala, which was previously known for having the largest captive elephant population, is experiencing a significant decline in numbers.<\/p>\n

2. Gaja Suchana mobile app:<\/strong>
\na.<\/strong> The Wildlife Institute of India has developed a mobile application called Gaja Suchana, allowing officials from all state forest departments to access the data.
\nb.<\/strong> This initiative aims to monitor the movement of captive elephants within<\/span> and between states<\/span>.
\nc.<\/strong> The database will aid in identifying elephants lacking valid ownership certificates.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is Wildlife Institute of India (WII)?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– It is an internationally acclaimed Institution, which offers training program, academic courses and advisory in wildlife research and management.<\/p>\n

2. Established<\/strong> in 1982 as an attached office of the Ministry of Environment and Forests. Subsequently, it was granted autonomous status in 1986.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Mandate<\/strong>– It carries research in areas of Biodiversity<\/span>, Endangered Species, Wildlife Policy, Wildlife Management<\/span>, Wildlife Forensics, Spatial Modelling, Eco-development, Habitat Ecology, Climate Change, Forensics, Remote Sensing and GIS, Laboratory, Herbarium, and an Electronic Library are the spheres of research too.<\/p>\n
