Recently, over 60 products from across India have been awarded the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This marks the first instance of such a large number of products being granted the GI tag at once.<\/p>\n

What is a GI tag?<\/h2>\n

1. About-<\/strong> Geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign which is used to identify products originating from a specific geographical location and that location gives it a distinct quality, characteristic.<\/p>\n

2. Regulation<\/strong>– The GI tags are governed by the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999<\/span>. They are issued by the Geographical Indication Registry, which operates under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.<\/p>\n

3. Significance<\/strong>– A geographical indication right enables those who have the right to use the indication to prevent its use by a third party<\/span> whose product does not conform to the applicable standards.<\/p>\n
