Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, Russia dismissed claims from a joint media investigation linking a Russian military intelligence unit to the ‘Havana syndrome’ which affected US diplomats and spies globally.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong>– It is a term used to describe a set of mental health symptoms reportedly experienced by US intelligence and embassy personnel in different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
History of origin<\/strong><\/p>\n

1.<\/strong> In late 2016, American diplomats and other personnel stationed in Havana reported feeling unwell after encountering peculiar sounds and experiencing unusual physical sensations.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> These symptoms, including nausea, intense headaches, fatigue, dizziness, sleep disturbances, and hearing impairment, have since been labeled as “Havana Syndrome.”<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are its causes?<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Initial speculation leaned towards a sonic attack by Cuban intelligence, but later the National Academy of Sciences suggested that pulsed microwaves could be responsible for these symptoms.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Microwaves, a type of electromagnetic radiation with frequencies between 300 megahertz (MHz) and 300 gigahertz (GHz), might have affected victims’ nervous systems.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> There are suspicions of high-powered microwaves being delivered<\/span> via a “microwave weapon.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– Microwave weapons are a form of direct energy weapons<\/span>. They employ beams of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation to heat the water in a person’s skin, causing pain and discomfort.<\/p>\n

Havana Syndrome in India<\/h2>\n

In India, the first case was reported in 2021 when a US intelligence officer travelling to New Delhi with a CIA director reported its symptoms.<\/p>\n
