It has been observed that caracal is on the verge of extinction. It has necessitated the need for its conservation.<\/p>\n

About\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n1) It is a medium-sized wild cat native to Africa, Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia<\/span> including India.
\n2) In India, Caracal is called Siya gosh<\/span>, a Persian name that translates as \u2018black Ear\u2019.
\n3) A Sanskrit fable (short story) exists about a small wild cat named deergha karn or \u2018long-eared\u2019.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Characteristics<\/strong><\/td>\n1) The caracal has long legs, a short face, long canine teeth.<\/span> It has distinctive ears that are long and pointy with tufts of black hair at their tips.
\n2) \u00a0It is an elusive, primarily nocturnal animal.<\/span> Its sightings are not common.
\n3) It\u00a0is a carnivore.<\/span> It typically preys upon small mammals, birds, and rodents.
\n4) It has traditionally been valued for its flexibility and its extraordinary ability to catch birds in flight.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat\u00a0<\/strong><\/td>\n1) Earlier they could be found in arid and semi-arid scrub forest<\/span> regions of 13 Indian states.
\n2) The most significant potential habitat for caracals is in Rajasthan, followed by Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Threats<\/strong><\/td>\n Large-scale hunting, illegal trading and<\/span> loss of natural habitats are major threats.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
