Natural gas is often referred to as a ‘Bridge Fuel’ for nations aiming to move away from coal and oil dependence while progressing towards renewable energy and electrification.<\/p>\n

What is a Bridge Fuel?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– A “bridge fuel” is a term used for a fuel that helps power society with minimal environmental impact<\/span> while transitioning to clean, renewable energy sources.<\/p>\n

2. Objective<\/strong>– The aim of using a bridge fuel is to substitute the majority of current fossil fuel-dependent energy sources<\/span> as we shift towards a cleaner, more renewable energy economy devoid of greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n

3. Factors considered for bridge fuel<\/strong>– Many view natural gas as a bridge fuel due to its lower greenhouse gas emissions during combustion. However, other factors for a bridge fuel includes enhancing national energy independence<\/span> and reducing pollution costs<\/span>.<\/p>\n

What is Natural gas?<\/h2>\n

1. About<\/strong>– Natural gas is a non-renewable resource <\/span>and is classified as a fossil fuel. It <\/span><\/span><\/span>comprises a mixture of gases abundant in hydrocarbons.<\/p>\n

2. Constituents<\/strong>– It primarily consists of colorless and odorless methane (CH4),<\/span> typically ranging from 70% to 90%<\/span> in composition. Further, it has\u00a0components like ethane (C2 H6)<\/span> and propane (C3 H8)<\/span>.<\/p>\n

3. Impurities<\/strong> Include carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and nitrogen (N).<\/p>\n

Uses of Natural gas<\/h2>\n

Natural gas undergoes processing to be converted into cleaner fuel<\/span> before<\/span> consumption<\/span>. During this process, various by-products such as propane, ethane, butane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen are extracted, which can be further utilized.<\/p>\n

1. Power generation<\/strong>: Natural gas powers electricity generation.<\/p>\n

2. Heating<\/strong>: It warms homes, buildings, and water.<\/p>\n

3. Cooking<\/strong>: It fuels stoves, ovens, and other cooking appliances.<\/p>\n

4. Industrial processes<\/strong>: Many industries use it for manufacturing, drying, and chemical reactions.<\/p>\n

5. Transportation<\/strong>: It fuels vehicles, including buses, trucks, and cars, often in compressed or liquefied form.<\/p>\n

6. Fertilizer production<\/strong>: Natural gas is a key ingredient in the production of ammonia-based fertilizers.<\/p>\n

Note<\/strong>– Natural gas emits 50% less CO2 than coal, making it a cleaner energy source.<\/p>\n
