Taiwan is prone to earthquakes because it lies along the Pacific &#8220;Ring of Fire,&#8221; where 90% of the world&#8217;s earthquakes take place.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Pacific &#8216;Ring of Fire&#8217;?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_289403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289403\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-289403 \" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Pacific-Ring-of-Fire.png?resize=528%2C393&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pacific 'Ring of Fire'\" width=\"528\" height=\"393\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Pacific-Ring-of-Fire.png?w=706&amp;ssl=1 706w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Pacific-Ring-of-Fire.png?resize=300%2C223&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-289403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Source- The Indian Express<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The Ring of Fire, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">also known as the Circum-Pacific Belt<\/span>, is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">chain of numerous volcanoes and earthquake<\/span>&#8211;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">prone areas<\/span> that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">stretches along the Pacific Ocean<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> It forms a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">horseshoe-shaped semicircle<\/span>, spanning approximately 40,250 kilometres in length.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> The Ring of Fire marks the borders between multiple tectonic plates such as the Pacific, Juan de Fuca, Cocos, Indian-Australian, Nazca, North American, and Philippine Plates.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.<\/strong> It <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">passes through 15 additional countries<\/span>, including the USA, Indonesia, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Guatemala, Russia, Chile, Peru, and the Philippines.<\/p>\n<h2>Features of Ring of Fire<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Active volcanoes:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>a.<\/strong> Volcanoes in the Ring of Fire are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">caused by the movement of tectonic plates<\/span>, often through a process called subduction. This occurs when two plates collide, with the heavier one being pushed beneath the other, resulting in the formation of deep trenches.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> The Ring of Fire <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hosts over 450 active and inactive volcanoes, making up 75% of the Earth&#8217;s total volcanoes<\/span>. These volcanoes form a semicircle or horseshoe shape around the Pacific Ocean rim.<br \/>\n<strong>c.<\/strong> The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">majority of active volcanoes along the Ring of Fire are located on its western side,<\/span> spanning from Russia to New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Earthquakes:<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a.<\/strong> The Ring of Fire experiences frequent earthquakes because the tectonic plates continuously slide past, collide with, or move above or below each other.<br \/>\n<strong>b.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">90% of earthquakes happen along the Ring of Fire<\/span>, including some of the most powerful ones. <strong>For example-<\/strong> The Valdivia Earthquake in Chile in 1960, which measured 9.5 on the Richter scale, holds the record as the strongest earthquake ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
