Responsible authority-<\/strong>\u00a0The allocation of symbols in elections falls under the jurisdiction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/election-commission\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Election Commission of India (ECI)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Law governed symbol allotment<\/strong>&#8211; This process is governed by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The Election Symbols (Reservation and Allotment) Order, 1968<\/span>, which aims to define, reserve, and assign symbols for recognized political parties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Symbols Classification<\/strong>&#8211; Symbols are classified as either <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">reserved<\/span> (reserved solely for recognized parties) or &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">free<\/span>&#8216; (accessible to unacknowledged registered parties).<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Gazette publication<\/strong>&#8211; The Election Commission publishes lists of parties along with their symbols in the Gazette of India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Recognised Political party symbol allotment<\/strong>&#8211; <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Exclusive symbols<\/span> are allocated to recognized national and state parties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6- Unrecognized registered parties symbol allotment<\/strong>&#8211; Candidates from unrecognized registered parties can select from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">free<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">non-exclusive symbols<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note-<\/strong> Rule 10B of the Symbols Order states that a &#8216;<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">registered unrecognized party&#8217; can use a common free symbol for two general elections<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>Are political parties allowed to express their preferences?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The 1968 order gives the Election Commission power to handle symbol selection and allocation for parliamentary and assembly elections, aiming to recognize political parties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Unregistered parties need to provide ten preferred symbols from the commission&#8217;s list<\/span>.
