border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #f7f0f0; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\">The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">started in 2003-04<\/span> to prevent and control diseases like Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Dengue,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Kala-azar<\/span>, Lymphatic Filariasis, Malaria, and Chikungunya.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2>Decline in Kala Azar Cases in India<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> According to the most recent data from NCVBDC, India <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">recorded a total of 520 cases of kala-azar in 2023 nationwide<\/span>, thus fulfilling the elimination criteria established by the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/world-health-organization-who\/#:~:text=It%20has%20the%20authority%20of,of%20the%20World%20Health%20Assembly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization (WHO).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> WHO criteria stipulates that <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">no area within the country should report more than one case per 10,000 people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> According to WHO, in 2020, India represented 18% of the world&#8217;s kala-azar cases.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Kala-Azar?<\/h2>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; <strong>Post Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL)<\/strong>&#8211; It occurs when Leishmania donovani invades and multiplies in skin cells, causing skin lesions. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">PKDL typically appears after kala-azar treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Strategies Adopted to Eliminate Kala Azar in India<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> <strong>Spraying:<\/strong> Intensive indoor residual spraying to target and reduce sandfly breeding grounds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> <strong>Wall Plastering:<\/strong> Coating walls with a specific soil (Gerrard Soil) to deter sandflies from nesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Treatment Compliance:<\/strong> Engaging the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) network to oversee treatment completion for PKDL patients.<\/p>\n<h2>Three mains form of the Kala-azar<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL)<\/strong>&#8211; Impacts multiple organs and represents the most severe illness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL)<\/strong> is the most common form, causing skin ulcers, mainly on exposed body parts, which can result in lifelong scars and disability or stigma.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
