According to data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC) Programme<\/span>, India has successfully met its goal of eradicating visceral leishmaniasis, commonly referred to as kala-azar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) started in 2003-04<\/span> to prevent and control diseases like Japanese Encephalitis (JE), Dengue, Kala-azar<\/span>, Lymphatic Filariasis, Malaria, and Chikungunya.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Decline in Kala Azar Cases in India<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> According to the most recent data from NCVBDC, India recorded a total of 520 cases of kala-azar in 2023 nationwide<\/span>, thus fulfilling the elimination criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/a><\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> WHO criteria stipulates that no area within the country should report more than one case per 10,000 people.<\/span><\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> According to WHO, in 2020, India represented 18% of the world’s kala-azar cases.<\/p>\n

What is Kala-Azar?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> Kala-azar, also known as visceral leishmaniasis<\/span>, is a parasitic disease caused by Leishmania parasites<\/span> (Leishmania donovani in India).
\n2.<\/strong> It is a neglected tropical disease<\/a> and is the second-largest parasitic killer in the world (after malaria)<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Transmission<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is transmitted through the bite of infected sandflies.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/strong><\/td>\nFever, weight loss, enlargement of the spleen and liver, and anemia<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Impact<\/strong><\/td>\nKala-azar primarily affects the spleen, liver, and bone marrow.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fatality rate<\/strong><\/td>\n95%, if left untreated.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Treatment<\/strong><\/td>\n1.<\/strong> Injectable liposomal amphotericin B is administered.
\n2.<\/strong> 12-week course of Oral Miltefosine<\/span> is prescribed for PKDL (Post Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis).<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Note<\/strong>– Post Kala-Azar Dermal Leishmaniasis (PKDL)<\/strong>– It occurs when Leishmania donovani invades and multiplies in skin cells, causing skin lesions. PKDL typically appears after kala-azar treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategies Adopted to Eliminate Kala Azar in India<\/h2>\n

1.<\/strong> Spraying:<\/strong> Intensive indoor residual spraying to target and reduce sandfly breeding grounds.<\/p>\n

2.<\/strong> Wall Plastering:<\/strong> Coating walls with a specific soil (Gerrard Soil) to deter sandflies from nesting.<\/p>\n

3.<\/strong> Treatment Compliance:<\/strong> Engaging the ASHA (Accredited Social Health Activist) network to oversee treatment completion for PKDL patients.<\/p>\n

Three mains form of the Kala-azar<\/h2>\n

1. Visceral leishmaniasis (VL)<\/strong>– Impacts multiple organs and represents the most severe illness.<\/p>\n

2. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL)<\/strong> is the most common form, causing skin ulcers, mainly on exposed body parts, which can result in lifelong scars and disability or stigma.<\/p>\n

3. Mucocutaneous leishmaniasis<\/strong>\u00a0destroys mucous membranes in the nose, mouth, and throat, leading to severe damage.<\/p>\n
