The forest department is monitoring an outbreak of mange among a pack of Asiatic wild dogs in the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR)<\/a> in the Nilgiris.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is a\u00a0skin disease<\/span> of animals caused by mite infestations.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Caused by<\/strong><\/td>\n Sarcoptes scabiei mite,<\/span>\u00a0which also causes human scabies.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Is it contagious?<\/strong><\/td>\n1. They are transmitted between animals by direct contact<\/span> and by objects that have been in contact with infected animals.
\n2. Humans can contract certain types of mange from infected dogs <\/span>and can temporarily infest human skin, leading to itching and discomfort.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/strong><\/td>\n\u00a0Inflammation, itching, thickening of the skin, and hair loss.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Prevention<\/strong><\/td>\nPrevention includes maintaining a clean environment, disinfect belongings, and avoid contact with infected or stray animals.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Treatment<\/strong><\/td>\nTreatment options aim to eliminate the mites, alleviate symptoms, and promote skin healing.<\/span> Topical medications are commonly prescribed to target localized mange areas.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Distribution<\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/td>\n		1) It is an\u00a0apex social carnivore\u00a0<\/span>in the\u00a0tropical forests of South and Southeast Asia.
\n2)\u00a0In India, Dholes are found in three clusters namely the\u00a0Western and Eastern Ghats,<\/span> central Indian landscape and North East India<\/span>.
\n3) According to a 2020 study,\u00a0Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh\u00a0rank high in conservation of dhole.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat<\/strong><\/td>\nDense jungles, steppes, mountains, scrub forests, and pine forests.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Threat<\/strong><\/td>\nCompetition and disease transmission from domestic dogs are a threat to this species.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
