It was established in <strong>2015.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Partner organisations:<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">CDP, United Nations Global Compact, We Mean Business Coalition, World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Functions: <\/strong>The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi):<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Establishes and encourages<\/span> exemplary practices in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">emissions reduction and net-zero goals<\/span> consistent with climatological research.<\/p>\n<p>b)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Creates frameworks, resources, and guidelines<\/span> to assist companies and financial institutions in establishing targets based on rigorous scientific evidence.<\/p>\n<p>c) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Evaluates and certifies<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">the targets<\/span> set by companies and financial institutions through its verification services to ensure they are scientifically grounded.<\/p>\n<p>5. It <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">distinguishes between near- and long-term goals and commitments:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">a) Near-term targets <span style=\"color: #333333;\">show how organizations intend to reduce emissions<\/span><\/span> over the next 5-10 years, crucial for significant progress by 2030 and a prerequisite for net zero targets.<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Long-term targets<\/span> indicate how organizations need to reduce their emissions to achieve net zero, according to the criteria of the SBTi Corporate Net-Zero Standard, by 2050 at the latest (2040 for the energy sector).<\/p>\n<p>6. SBTi oversees the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">SBTi Net-Zero Standard<\/span> which\u00a0is the world\u2019s only framework for corporate net-zero target setting in line with climate science.<\/p>\n<h2>About scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions<\/h2>\n<p>These scopes are defined by the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Greenhouse Gas Protocol<\/span> to prevent double counting and provide a comprehensive view of their greenhouse gas impacts.<\/p>\n<p>a) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Scope 1 Emissions:<\/span> This includes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">direct emissions from owned or controlled sources. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>b<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">) Scope 2 Emissions:<\/span> This includes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">indirect emissions<\/span> from the generation of purchased electricity, steam, heating, and cooling consumed by the organization.<\/p>\n<p>c) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Scope 3 Emissions:<\/span> This includes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">other indirect emissions not owned or controlled by the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Environment\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source\u2013 This post is based on the article \u201cCarbon Controversy: Corporate climate action watchdog\u2019s new decision regarding use of offsetting causes backlash\u201d published in \u201cDown To Earth\u201d on 12th April 2024.
