Israeli embassy in Tehran was transformed into the Palestinian embassy. Flight routes between the countries were cancelled.<br \/>\nKhomeini declared every last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Quds Day<span style=\"color: #333333;\">, on which <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">large rallies are taken out in support of Palestinians across Iran<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 90px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 28.303%; text-align: left; height: 90px;\"><strong>Modern Phase of Conflict<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 71.697%; text-align: left; height: 90px;\"><strong>Proxy Militias and Wars-<\/strong> Iran has been engaging in proxy wars by fighting supporting proxy militias against Israel like <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hezbollah<\/span> (Lebanon), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Hamas <\/span>(Gaza), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Houthis<\/span>\u00a0(Yemen). Isreal is known to back <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mojahedin-e Khalq<\/span> (MEK), a Europe-based organization, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sunni organisations in Iran\u2019s southeastern Sistan<\/span> and Baluchistan province, and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Kurdish armed groups<\/span> based in Iraqi Kurdistan.<br \/>\n<strong>Attack on Iranian Nuclear Programme-<\/strong> The Iranian nuclear programme, which has been a primary focus of Israel, was <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">attacked by US\u2019 Struxnet computer virus in 2000s<\/span> to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">target centrifuges<\/span> enriching uranium as claimed by Iran. Further, there have been attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists.<br \/>\n<strong>US withdrawal from Iran Nuclear Agreement-<\/strong> Donald Trump&#8217;s decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018 was seen as a<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> blow to Tehran and a victory for Israel<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What are India&#8217;s stake in the region which will be endangered by the recently escalating Iran-Israel Conflict?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. Risks to the Indian Diaspora-<\/strong> The escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict poses a grave risk to the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> lives and livelihoods of the the large Indian Diaspora<\/span> in West Asia. (~18,000 Indians in Israel, ~5,000-10,000 Indians in Iran, and around 90 lakh people Indians in the Gulf and Other West Asian region).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Endangers Energy security-<\/strong> Any escalation of the conflict will pose a grave threat to India&#8217;s energy security as the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">West Asia region contributes to India\u2019s 80 per cent of oil supplies<\/span>. The conflict will have an adverse impact on energy prices in India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Endangers India&#8217;s economic growth-<\/strong> A surge in oil prices on account of the war would impact India&#8217;s economic growth, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">drive up inflationary pressures<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">disrupt the balance of trade and current account deficit<\/span>, consequently <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">exerting pressure on the rupee<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Risks to Indian Equity and Bullion markets-<\/strong> The Indian equity and bullion markets which are already <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">facing the pressure of reduced FDI and FPI inflows due to interest rate hikes in US<\/span>, will be further impacted by a full fledged war between Israel and Iran. <strong>For ex-<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Further Increase in the gold prices<\/span> as previously witnessed in the Ukraine-Russia war and Israel-Hamas wars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Derail the progress on the IMEC Corridor-<\/strong> The escalation of the Iran-Israel conflict will derail the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">progress made by India to build consensus in the turbulent West Asia<\/span> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/upsc-current-affairs-news\/india-middle-east-europe-corridor-explained-pointwise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">India-Middle-East-Europe Economic corridor<\/a>, which has strategic as well as economic benefits for Delhi<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Diplomatic challenge of balancing strategic ties- <\/strong>The widening of the conflict will affect the balance of strategic ties maintained by India with both Iran and Israel. It would be <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">difficult for India to maintain an ambivalent position<\/span> in case of further worsening of conflict.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>What is the importance of Iran and Israel for India?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Israel&#8217;s Importance for India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Economic and Commerce- <\/strong>India has a positive trade balance with Israel. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India is Israel\u2019s third-largest trade partner in Asia<\/span>. The bilateral merchandise trade has grown from USD 200 million in 1992 to USD 6.35 billion (excluding defence).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Defence-<\/strong> India imports critical defence technologies from Israel. Nearly 41 % of Israel defence exports are to India. Indian armed forces use <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Israeli Phalcon AWACS (Airborne Warning And Control Systems)<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Heron drones<\/span> to Barak anti-missile defence systems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Energy-<\/strong> India has been <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">awarded exploration license to extract and import natural gas from the Tamar and Levianthan gas fields<\/span>. This is a clear sign of diversification of the relation from defence to energy sector.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Science &amp; Technology-<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India-Israel Industrial R&amp;D and Technological Innovation Fund<\/span> (I4F) has been set up to promote, facilitate and support joint industrial R&amp;D projects.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Space-<\/strong> In 2002, India and Israel signed a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cooperative agreement promoting space collaboration<\/span>. India has successfully launched TecSAR and RISAT-2 radar imaging satellites of Israel from PSLV of ISRO.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Iran&#8217;s Importance for India<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">1. Energy Security-<\/span><\/strong> Iran has been one of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">major suppliers of crude oil to India<\/span>. This has recently suffered due to US sanctions.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #333333;\">2. Similar Geopolitical concerns-<\/span><\/strong> Both countries have <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">shared concerns on terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan<\/span>. Both Iran and India share similar concerns on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Taliban\u2019s treatment of minorities<\/span> and the lack of an inclusive and representative government in Kabul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Balance engagements with other key actors in the Middle East-<\/strong> India must try to forever balance its engagement with key regional actors- <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Egypt<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Iran<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Israel<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Qatar<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Turkey<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Saudi Arabia<\/span>, and the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> United Arab Emirates<span style=\"color: #333333;\">&#8211; <\/span><\/span>whose orientation and interests are often different in the middle eastern conflicts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
