The Pahariyas primarily reside in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Jharkhand and West Bengal<\/span>, with smaller populations in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Odisha.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Some of the Mal Paharia <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">tribes also identify them as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Malto, Malti, Maltu, Maler, etc<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. They are<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> forest dwellers<\/span> and mainly engage in<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> jhum or shifting agriculture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. In Jharkhand, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Pahariyas are divided into two groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>a) Mal Pahariya:<\/strong> These individuals inhabit the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">southern hills of Damin-i-koh<\/span> and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">southern and eastern regions of the Santhal Parganas.<\/span> They belong to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Proto-Australoid race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>b) Shauria Pahariya (or Maler Paharia):<\/strong> This group is predominantly found in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Santhal Parganas.<\/span> Historically, their main settlement was in the region of Karnataka, but today they are primarily located in the mountainous areas of Rajmahal and Santhal Pargana.<\/p>\n<p>They speak <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Malto, their native language<\/span>, which shows influences from<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Havli and Chharisgarhi languages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>4. <strong>Religious Practices:<\/strong> The Pahariyas worship deities specific to their households, clans, and villages, such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Mait, Maa, Gangadi, Sunadi, Rupadi, and Budharaj.<\/span> They also believe in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">naturalism and worship natural objects<\/span> like sun, river, mountain, tree, animal, birds,<br \/>\nplants and bushes.<\/p>\n<p>5.<strong> Language:<\/strong> They speak mal Pahariya language.
