This average is calculated over an extended period, typically<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> spanning 30 years or 50 years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. <strong>Purpose:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) Since annual<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> rainfall can significantly differ across regions, months, and even years<\/span> within the same region or month, the Long Period Average (LPA) is essentially calculated to even out these fluctuations to enable relatively accurate predictions.<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A 50-year LPA compensates for major deviations<\/span> due to exceptional years of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">abnormally high or low rainfall<\/span>, such as those caused by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">El Ni\u00f1o or La Ni\u00f1a events,<\/span> recurring droughts etc.<\/p>\n<p>4.<strong> IMD Categories:<\/strong> The IMD classifies rainfall deviations based on the LPA into the following categories:<\/p>\n<p>a)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Normal or Near Normal:<\/span> Actual rainfall within +\/-10% of LPA (96-104% of LPA).<\/p>\n<p>b) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Below Normal:<\/span> Actual rainfall less than 10% of LPA (90-96% of LPA)<\/p>\n<p>c) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Above Normal: <span style=\"color: #333333;\">Actual rainfall between 104% and 110% of LPA.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">d)<\/span> Deficient:<\/span> Actual rainfall less than 90% of LPA.<\/p>\n<p>e)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Excess:<\/span> Actual rainfall more than 110% of LPA.<\/p>\n<p>5.
