BH3 is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">dormant black hole<\/span> formed from the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">collapse of an exploding star<\/span>. It has a mass <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">33 times greater than our sun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. It is located only<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> 2,000 light years away from Earth<\/span> in the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Aquila constellation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3. Astronomers discovered the black hole while combing through observations taken by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">European Space Agency\u2019s Gaia space telescope<\/span> for an upcoming data release to the scientific community.<\/p>\n<p>4. A <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">wobbling star orbits<\/span> Gaia BH3<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> every 11.6 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>5. The most massive black hole in our galaxy is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sagittarius A*<\/span> which is the supermassive black hole located at the center of the Milky Way.<\/p>\n<p>It has about <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4 million times the mass of the sun,<\/span> but that is because it\u2019s a supermassive black hole, rather than a stellar black hole.<\/p>\n<h2>About supermassive black hole and stellar black hole<\/h2>\n<p>a) Stellar-mass black holes <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">originate from the gravitational collapse of a single star or the combination of two neutron stars. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>b) These black holes typically have<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> masses that range from approximately three to fifty times that of sun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>c) Supermassive black holes are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">immensely larger, with masses starting at around 50,000 times the mass of sun<\/span> and can reach up to millions or even billions of times greater.<\/p>\n<p>They are\u00a0invariably<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> located at the centers of galaxies and present in nearly all galaxies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>d) The formation of supermassive black holes remains a mystery to scientists, as they are too vast to have been formed from the collapse of individual stars.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus: Science and technology (space)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source\u2013 This post on Gaia BH3 is based on the article &#8220;Astronomers spot a massive \u2018sleeping giant\u2019 black hole less than 2,000 light-years from Earth&#8221; published in\u00a0\u201cCNN\u201d\u00a0on 16th April 2024.
