Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Recently, India delivered the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles to the Philippines.<\/p>\n

About BrahMos supersonic missiles<\/h2>\n

1. About:<\/strong> The\u00a0BrahMos<\/span> is a ramjet supersonic cruise missile\u00a0<\/span>jointly developed by the\u00a0Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)\u00a0and\u00a0Russia\u2019s NPO Mashinostroyeniya.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. The name \u201cBrahMos\u201d is derived from the combination of two rivers: the\u00a0Brahmaputra\u00a0in India and the\u00a0Moskva in Russia.\u00a0<\/span>It is based on the Russian\u00a0P-800 Oniks\u00a0missile.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. It is currently the world\u2019s fastest anti-ship cruise missile<\/span> in operation and is capable of reaching speeds of Mach 2.8 to Mach 3.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. They can hit a target up to a range of 290 kilometers<\/span> and can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategic significance of BrahMos<\/h2>\n

1. BrahMos is a two-stage missile with a<\/span> solid propellant booster engine.<\/span><\/p>\n

a) Its first stage<\/span> brings the missile to supersonic speed (meaning faster than sound) and then gets separated.<\/p>\n

b) The liquid ramjet or the second stage<\/span> then takes the missile closer to three times the speed of sound in cruise phase.<\/p>\n

2. It has a very low radar signature,<\/span> making it stealthy, and can achieve a variety of trajectories. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Being a \u2018fire and forget\u2019 type missile, it<\/span><\/span> can achieve a cruising altitude of 15 km and a terminal altitude as low as 10 m to hit the target.<\/p>\n

4. BrahMos which are called \u201cstandoff range weapons\u201d<\/span>\u00a0are fired from a range far enough to allow the attacker to evade defensive counter-fire.<\/p>\n

5. The BrahMos has three times the speed, 2.5 times flight range<\/span> and higher range compared to subsonic cruise missiles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
