Recently, Mount Ruang began erupting, sending an ash cloud more than a mile high into the sky.<\/p>\n

1. Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano<\/span> located on Ruang Island, North Sulawesi.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Ruang Volcano towers at 725 meters (2,400 feet) high.<\/span> Its summit reaches 10,932 feet above sea level<\/span> and features a caldera approximately two miles wide.<\/span><\/p>\n

About stratovolcano<\/h2>\n

1. Stratovolcanoes are tall, steep, and cone-shaped,<\/span> differ from the flatter shield volcanoes by having higher peaks.<\/p>\n

2. They are primarily located above subduction zones<\/span> and are a major part of extensive volcanically active areas<\/span> like the Pacific Ring of Fire. <\/span><\/p>\n

3. Stratovolcanoes account for about 60% of the Earth’s individual volcanoes<\/span> and are mostly known for erupting andesite and dacite lavas. <\/span><\/p>\n

These lavas are cooler and more viscous compared to basalt<\/span>, allowing gas pressures to build significantly and often leading to explosive eruptions.<\/p>\n

4. These volcanoes typically consist of an equal mix of lava and pyroclastic material. <\/span>The layering of these materials is why they are also commonly referred to as composite volcanoes.<\/span><\/p>\n

6. Stratovolcanoes usually feature a small crater,<\/span> which may be filled with water or ice, or contain a volcanic dome when the volcano is not actively erupting.<\/p>\n
