Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

The Supreme Court stayed the construction of four proposed dams inside Kalesar Wildlife Sanctuary in Haryana.<\/p>\n

Location<\/strong><\/td>\n1. It is\u00a0situated within the Yamunanagar District of Haryana,<\/span> nestled in the foothills of the Shiwalik ranges of the Himalayas.<\/span>
\n2. Rajaji National Park,<\/span> situated in Uttarakhand, is located to the northeast of this park.
\n3. Simbalbara National Park<\/span> located in the Shivalik Hills, lies to the north, sharing a border with Himachal Pradesh. Morni Hills can be found to the west.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Unique features<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The terrain ranges from plains to hills, reaching elevations of up to 700 meters, with narrow valleys known as “khols”<\/span> scattered between the hills.
\n2. These valleys contain seasonal rivulets, referred to as “soats,”<\/span> which typically remain dry for the majority of the year.
\n3. Within the sanctuary stands the Kalesar Fort,<\/span> believed to have been constructed during the reign of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
\n4. The park is renowned for its Dak bungalows,<\/span> colonial-era administrative architectural structures.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Status<\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/td>\n		It was declared as a national Park<\/span> in 2003.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
River flowing through<\/strong><\/td>\nRiver Yamuna\u00a0lies<\/span> to\u00a0its east.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Flora<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The majority of the forest is densely populated with tall sal trees.<\/span>
\n2. Other trees that are found in the forest are Semul, Bahera, Amaltas, Shisham, Khair, Sain, Chhal and Jhingan.<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Fauna<\/strong><\/td>\nIt is home to\u00a0many threatened animals like\u00a0leopards, Ghoral, Barking deer, Sambar,\u00a0Chital, Python, King Cobra, Monitor lizard<\/span> etc.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
