The rare blood clot triggered by AstraZeneca&#8217;s Covid vaccine<\/a> published in \u201cIndian Today\u201d on 30th April 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in the News?<\/h2>\n<p>Recently, concerns were raised over the rare side effects of the AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID vaccine. AstraZeneca has admitted that its vaccine can cause <span style=\"color: #333333;\">Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS) in rare case.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>About Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS)<\/h2>\n<p><strong>1. About Thrombocytopenia Syndrome (TTS): <\/strong>It is a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rare condition<\/span> in which there is simultaneous<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">\u00a0occurrence of blood clots (thrombosis) and a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).<\/span> It is also known as<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> &#8216;vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia&#8217; (VITT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Thrombosis<\/span> is the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">formation of a blood clot,<\/span> which can reduce normal blood flow in an affected blood vessel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Symptoms: <\/strong>Various symptoms are linked to TTS, such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">shortness of breath, chest or limb pain, tiny red spots or bruising on the skin beyond the injection site, headaches, <span style=\"color: #333333;\">and<\/span> numbness in certain body regions<\/span>. TTS may result in restricted blood flow due to clot formation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Diagnosis and treatment: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Diagnosis-<\/strong> Diagnosis of TTS involves a combination of blood tests and imaging studies, such as CT scans.<\/p>\n<p><b>Treatment-<\/b> Treatment for TTS is typically comprised of the following-<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">a.<\/span> Anticoagulant medications<\/span> to prevent further clotting.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">b.<\/span> Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) <\/span>which involves infusing a blood product containing antibodies<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">c.<\/span> High-dose prednisone,<\/span> which is a form of steroid medication.<\/p>\n<h2>How are TTS and blood clots linked to the AstraZeneca vaccine?<\/h2>\n<p>1. TTS was a rare syndrome reported in people who received a Covid-19 <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">adenovirus vector-based vaccine.\u00a0<\/span>The incidence of TTS has been <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">marginally higher among individuals under 60 years of age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>2. TTS can be seen in various body regions,<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> including the brain, the abdomen, the lungs, limb veins and arteries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3.
