Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) recently tested a Supersonic Missile-Assisted Release of Torpedo (SMART) system. This signifies a leap forward in India\u2019s defense technology.<\/p>\n

It has been tested from a ground-based mobile launcher positioned at the launching complex 4 of Abdul Kalam Island.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. About: <\/strong>SMART is a next-generation missile-based light-weight torpedo delivery system.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Developed by:<\/strong> It\u00a0has been designed and developed by the DRDO.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Aim:<\/strong> It aims to enhance the anti-submarine warfare capability of the Indian Navy.<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Features:<\/strong> It has several features which distinguish it with conventional range of lightweight torpedo.<\/span><\/p>\n

a) It can be launched from both coasts and warship.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

b)\u00a0<\/span>It is canister-based missile system<\/span> which consists of several advanced sub-systems, namely <\/span>two-stage solid propulsion system, electromechanical actuator system, precision inertial navigation system etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0<\/strong>The system is canister-based<\/span> means that it is housed within a sealed container that can be easily transported and launched.<\/p>\n

c)\u00a0The system\u00a0<\/span>carries advanced light-weight torpedo<\/span>\u00a0as payload along with\u00a0<\/span>parachute-based release system.<\/span><\/p>\n

d) It also consists of several state-of-the-art mechanisms<\/span>\u00a0such as symmetric separation, ejection and velocity control.<\/p>\n

5. Significance:<\/strong> The SMART would enhance the Navy\u2019s strength and will revolutionize underwater warfare capabilities of India.<\/span> It also serves as testament of India’s advancements in indigenous defence research and development.<\/span><\/p>\n
