Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

With the increasing biodiversity crisis, C<\/span>onservationists have suggested Conservation of red colobus monkey species. Their conservation could have cascading net positive impacts on African tropical forest health.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nThe world monkey family consists of two major groups- Colobines<\/span> and Cercopithecine<\/span>.
\nColobines-<\/strong> Are primarily leaf-eaters. Red Colobus monkey belongs to this group<\/span>. This Group also includes langurs from South and Southeast Asia.
\nCercopithecine-<\/strong> These are onmivores and include animals in their diet. It includes macaques of south and southeast Asia and the mangabeys, mandrills, drills and baboons of Africa.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Habitat and Location<\/strong><\/td>\nLocation-<\/strong> They are primitive monkey species native to western, central, and eastern Africa. They are found from Senegal in the west<\/span> to the Zanzibar Archipelago in the east<\/span>.
\nHabitat-<\/strong> Their habitats include humid forests, coastal thickets, and scrub.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Vulnerability Status<\/strong><\/td>\nThey have been listed as one of the world\u2019s 25 most endangered primates by the IUCN<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Features<\/strong><\/td>\n1. Appearance-<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>They have <\/span><\/span>brown and orange <\/span>coat<\/span><\/span>, white <\/span><\/span>whiskers <\/span><\/span>and a<\/span><\/span> black scalp<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>2<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>Distinctive feature-<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0Unlike other monkey species, colobus monkeys <\/span><\/span>do not have thumbs.<\/span><\/span> Instead of thumbs, they have a small remnant bump.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>3.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Nature-<\/span><\/span><\/strong>\u00a0They are primarily\u00a0<\/span><\/span>arboreal <\/span><\/span>and<\/span><\/span>\u00a0are mostly\u00a0<\/span><\/span>restricted to humid forests.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>
<\/span>4. Diet-<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u00a0They are <\/span>mainly herbivores<\/span> and thus feed upon <\/span><\/span><\/span>young leaves<\/span>, flowers, and unripe fruit.<\/span><\/span> They are also known to <\/span><\/span>eat\u00a0charcoal\u00a0or\u00a0clay<\/span><\/span> which <\/span>help<\/span> them to combat the <\/span><\/span><\/span>cyanide<\/span><\/span> some leaves may contain<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span> \u00a0<\/span><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

What are the Threats to the Red Colobus Monkey<\/h2>\n

There have been various threats to the survival of the primitive species:<\/p>\n

a) Habitat loss-<\/strong>\u00a0It is the primary threat to colobus monkeys today due to expansion of human populations.<\/span>
\nb) Hunting-<\/strong>\u00a0They have been hunted for their beautiful fur and skin<\/span> as it has been used to make dance costumes, hats, and capes.
\nc) Predators- <\/strong>They are often preyed upon by other predators<\/span> such as chimpanzee, leopard etc.<\/p>\n

What Conservation efforts are required<\/h2>\n

Being an indicator species,<\/span> red colobus monkey needs conservation measures such as:
\na) Financial support<\/strong>-More economic investment to create and manage protected areas<\/span> for red colobus monkeys.
\nb) Community engagement-<\/strong> There is need to provide support to and engaging with communities<\/span> that live in proximity to these primates.
\nc)<\/strong><\/span> Survey based study-<\/strong><\/span>Survey should be carried out<\/span> to estimate the exact populations of these monkeys and creating awareness about their conservation value.
\nd) Legal safeguard-<\/strong> They require legal safeguards<\/span> and should be designated as priority species for conservation<\/span> in national legislations and international agreements.<\/p>\n
