It was ranked 161st in the 2023. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This ranking places India alongside nations like the occupied Palestinian territories, UAE, Turkey, and Russia, <\/span>indicating poor press freedom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. India&#8217;s past performance: <\/strong>India has consistently ranked over 100 since 2003, showing a long-term trend of limited press freedom. The country&#8217;s press freedom situation has deteriorated rapidly in recent years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Global Comparisons: <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>a) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Scandinavian countries<\/span> (Norway, Denmark, Sweden)<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> top the rankings<\/span> with the highest press freedom. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Eritrea, Syria, and Afghanistan rank the lowest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>b) Among BRICS nations, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Brazil and South Africa rank higher than India<\/span>, whereas<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> China and Russia are lower.<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">In South Asia, India ranks lower than all countries except Bangladesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Global Trends: <\/strong>The global trend shows a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">decline in press freedom<\/span>, with an average drop of 7.6 points worldwide, accompanied by an increase in political repression of journalists and media.<\/p>\n<p>a) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Press freedom remains robust primarily in European Union countries,<\/span> which recently implemented their first media freedom law (EMFA).
