The arecanut grown in the Tirthahalli region has found to be the highest quality among all the varieties grown in Karnataka.<\/p>\n

Description<\/strong>– It is usually referred to as Areca palm<\/span>, yellow palm<\/span>, butterfly palm etc.The arecanut palm is the source of a common chewing nut, popularly known as betel nut or Supari.<\/span><\/p>\n

Production<\/strong>– India is the largest producer as well as consumer<\/span> of arecanut.<\/p>\n

Major producing states<\/strong>– Karnataka (40%), Kerala (25%), Assam (20%), Tamil Nadu, Meghalaya and West Bengal.<\/p>\n

Grading<\/strong>– Arecanut kernels are boiled, and then areca precipitates are added after removing the husk. Afterwards, the nuts are dried and sorted into different grades like Nuli, Hasa, Rashi, Bette, and Gorabalu<\/span> based on their market worth.<\/p>\n

What are the favourable agroclimatic conditions for growing Arecanut ?<\/h2>\n

1) Climate<\/strong>– It is mostly confined to 28\u00ba north and south of the equator. It grows well within the temperature range of 14\u00baC and 36\u00baC<\/span> . It is adversely affected by temperatures below 10\u00baC and above 40\u00baC.<\/p>\n

2) Soil<\/strong>– The largest area under the crop is found in gravelly laterite soils of red clay type<\/span>. It can also be grown on fertile clay loam soils.<\/p>\n

Sticky clay, sandy, alluvial, brackish and calcareous soils are not suitable for arecanut cultivation.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0Ideal rainfall<\/strong> \u2013 750 mm to 4500 mm\/ Irrigation<\/p>\n

4) Season<\/strong>–June \u2013 December<\/span> is found to be the optimum.<\/p>\n
