KP.2 and KP1.1 are descendants of the Omicron JN.1 variant, which proliferated worldwide.<\/p>\n<h2>About FLiRT Variants:<\/h2>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/epaper.thehindu.com\/ccidist-ws\/th\/th_delhi\/issues\/82599\/OPS\/Public\/GG1CPFH1N.1%2BGGHCPFHU8.1.jpg?resize=593%2C376&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"593\" height=\"376\" \/><\/p>\n<p>i) <strong>About FLiRT Variants: <\/strong>The FLiRT variants are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">new strains of the SARS-CoV-2 virus<\/span> that have emerged in the United States. They are distant relatives of the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> Omicron variant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>ii) Variants:<\/strong> Two main strains have been identified within the FLiRT group: <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">KP.2 and KP.1.1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>iii) Caused by:<\/strong> These variants were <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">first detected in wastewater samples<\/span> across the country and are <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">descendants of the JN.1 lineage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Reasons for Concern:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>i) Scientists are concerned that<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> KP.2 and KP.1.1<\/span> may be more adept at evading the immune system due to mutations in their spike proteins.<\/p>\n<p>ii)\u00a0 Factors such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">waning immunity and suboptimal uptake<\/span> of the latest COVID-19 vaccines raise concerns about a potential surge in infections during the summer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.
