Ludhiana\u2019s Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has developed a biocontrol agent, Trichoderma asperellum<\/span>, to combat foot rot disease in Basmati rice varieties. Foot rot is a prevalent issue that reduces yields and threatens the state\u2019s export prospects.<\/p>\n

What is it?<\/strong><\/td>\nFoot Rot is a fungal disease affecting Basmati rice<\/span>, most vulnerable at the seedling stage and potentially after transplantation if infected seedlings are used.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Causal Agent<\/strong><\/td>\nThe disease is caused by the fungus Fusarium verticillioides. <\/span>It is both soil and seed-borne. It spreads through the plant’s roots and colonizes the stem base.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Symptoms<\/strong><\/td>\nInfected seedlings initially turn pale yellow<\/span>, then elongate, dry up, and often die.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Current Treatment Methods<\/strong><\/td>\na) Biological:<\/strong> Seedlings are treated with Trichoderma harzianum<\/span> before sowing and transplantation to prevent fungal growth.
\nNote:<\/strong> It is a biocontrol agent<\/span> that provides an eco-friendly alternative to conventional pesticides<\/span>, helping in disease management while reducing environmental impact.
\nb) Chemical:<\/strong> Seeds are treated with fungicides<\/span> such as Sprint 75 WS (a combination of carbendazim and mancozeb) before sowing. However, these chemical treatments can negatively affect the soil and pose toxicity risks to consumers.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Regulatory Action<\/strong><\/td>\nThe fungicide carbendazim<\/span> has been banned in Punjab<\/span> due to concerns over high residue levels left in crops.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
