Why in the News?<\/h2>\n

Two temple boards in Kerala have prohibited the use of oleander flowers<\/span> in offerings. This decision follows the tragic death of a 24-year-old woman who accidentally consumed oleander leaves.<\/p>\n

1. About oleander flowers:<\/strong> Nerium oleander is commonly known as oleander or rosebay.<\/span> It is a globally cultivated plant found in tropical, subtropical, and<\/span> temperate regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Use:<\/strong> It is renowned for its ability to withstand drought conditions.<\/span> It is frequently used for ornamental and landscaping purposes. It is also used for<\/span> medicinal purposes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Varieties and Names in Kerala:<\/strong> In Kerala, locally known as arali and kanaveeram<\/span>. It is grown along highways and beaches, serving as natural green fencing. Different varieties of oleander exist, each with flowers of varying colours.<\/p>\n

4. Traditional Medicinal Use:<\/strong> It is used in treatment of vrana (infected wounds), kustha (skin diseases including leprosy), krimi (microbes and parasites), kandu (itching).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

5. Why Oleander flowers Banned by Kerala temple boards?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite medicinal use, oleander is toxic.<\/p>\n

i) This is due to the properties of cardiac glycosides<\/span> (a type of chemical) including oleandrin, folinerin, and digitoxigenin,<\/span> which are present in all parts of the plant.<\/p>\n

ii) Cardiac glycosides have therapeutic value in heart conditions<\/span> but have a narrow therapeutic window, leading to frequent overdose and toxicity.<\/p>\n

iii) Toxic effects<\/strong> <\/span>include nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting, confusion, irregular heartbeat, and, in severe cases, death. Ingestion or inhalation of smoke from burning oleander can also be intoxicating.<\/p>\n

iv) Symptoms typically last for 1 to 3 days and may necessitate hospitalization. Fatalities are uncommon.<\/p>\n
