This data may indicate their disappearance. However, it&#8217;s important to note that this doesn&#8217;t indicate a general reduction in trees <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">outside of forests<\/span> because research was specifically concentrated on<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> large individual trees<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>2) Major losses (up to 50%) were noticed in certain areas of Telangana, Maharashtra, and eastern Madhya Pradesh. In certain <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">hotspot regions<\/span>, as many as 22 big trees disappeared per square kilometre.<\/p>\n<p>3)The majority of losses have probably happened between 2018 and 2020.<\/p>\n<h2>What was the methodology by Copenhagen researchers?<\/h2>\n<p>1) The analysis tracked individual large trees (not overall tree cover) in farmlands using<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> high-resolution satellite imagery<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">machine learnin<\/span>g.<\/p>\n<p>2) The researchers combined satellite imagery from <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">RapidEye<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">PlanetScope<\/span> repositories. These satellites have resolutions of<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> three to five meters<\/span>, allowing them to detect <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">individual trees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>3) In contrast, the<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> FSI<\/span> relies on data from the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Sentinel satellite<\/span>, which has a coarser resolution of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">10 meters<\/span>, enabling the detection of blocks of trees <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rather than individual one<\/span>s.<\/p>\n<h2>What are the reasons for the loss of large trees in Indian farmlands?<\/h2>\n<p>1) Conversion of farmland with trees to <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">paddy cultivation<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>2) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Established agroforestry systems<\/span> are being replaced by<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> paddy expansion<\/span> that is supported\u00a0 \u00a0by new water sources.<\/p>\n<p>3) Large trees are removed.
