French security forces are intensifying their actions to restore order in New Caledonia due to continuing and fatal disturbances.<\/p>\n

1. Geographical Location:<\/strong> It is situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean,<\/span> approximately 1,500 km east of Australia. It consists of the main island, Grande Terre<\/span>, the Loyalty Islands<\/span> (Ouv\u00e9a, Lifou, Tiga, and Mar\u00e9), the Belep archipelago<\/span>, the Isle of Pines, and several remote islands.<\/p>\n

2. It has been inhabited for several thousand years by indigenous groups. The most notable are the Melanesian Kanak people.<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Political Status<\/strong><\/p>\n

i) Autonomy<\/strong>: A French overseas collectivity, with substantial autonomy as per the 1998 Noum\u00e9a Accord.<\/p>\n

ii) Governance:<\/strong> It is governed under the Noum\u00e9a Accord and the Organic Law of March 1999<\/span> which outlines its constitutional framework and relationship with France.<\/p>\n

iii) Head of State:<\/strong> The President of the French Republic<\/span> is head of state represented locally by a High Commissioner.<\/p>\n

4. Demographics<\/strong><\/p>\n

i) Its capital is at Noum\u00e9a, located on Grande Terre.<\/p>\n

ii) It has population of around 270,000 as of 2019, with approximately 39% being indigenous Kanak people. The rest include European Caledonians, Polynesians, and other groups such as Vietnamese, Indonesian, and Algerian.<\/p>\n

iii) Citizenship:<\/strong> Residents are French and European citizens, with rights to reside anywhere in France and to vote in territorial and French national elections.<\/p>\n

5)\u00a0 It has been classified as one of the EU\u2019s Overseas Countries and Territories<\/span> (OCTs<\/span>). However, it is not part of the EU, Eurozone, or Schengen area.<\/p>\n

6) New Caledonia hosts the headquarters of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community,<\/span> which was established in 1947<\/span> to support economic and social stability<\/span> in the South Pacific. Its members include Australia, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.<\/p>\n
