The 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting started on May 20, in Kochi, Kerala.<\/p>\n

1. It is an international agreement that governs activities in Antarctica<\/span>. It was signed on December 1, 1959, and entered into force on June 23, 1961.<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Purpose:<\/strong>\u00a0The treaty designates\u00a0Antarctica as a scientific preserve\u00a0<\/span>and ensures that it remains exclusively for peaceful purposes.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 The treaty was initially signed by 12 nations<\/span> that were active in Antarctica during the International Geophysical Year of 1957-58. These included major countries like the USA, USSR, and the UK, among others. As of 2024, the treaty has 56 member parties.<\/span><\/p>\n

4.<\/span> India is also<\/span> party to Antarctic Treaty from<\/span> 1983.<\/span><\/p>\n

5. The Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) includes additional agreements that manage international relations regarding Antarctica.<\/p>\n

6. Primary Goals:<\/strong><\/p>\n

a) Scientific Freedom:<\/strong> This treaty ensures that scientific research in Antarctica is conducted freely and cooperatively.<\/span><\/p>\n

b) Peaceful Usage<\/strong>: It designates the continent as a zone for peaceful activities only<\/span>, banning military operations.<\/p>\n

c) Demilitarization:<\/strong> It aims to keep the continent free from military conflicts and hostilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

d) Status Quo on Claims: <\/strong>The treaty acknowledges existing territorial claims, yet it prohibits the establishment of any new claims.<\/p>\n

7. Principal Provisions<\/strong><\/p>\n

a) Geographical Coverage:<\/strong> The treaty covers all territories south of 60\u00b0 South Latitude<\/span><\/p>\n

b) Resource Exploitation and Claims:<\/strong> It prohibits new territorial claims and resource exploitation.<\/span><\/p>\n

c) Nuclear-Free Zone:<\/strong> It establishes Antarctica as a nuclear weapon-free zone.<\/span><\/p>\n

8. Significance of the treaty: <\/strong><\/p>\n

a) The treaty has evolved to address new challenges<\/span> like marine conservation and environmental protection.<\/p>\n

b) The treaty acknowledged need for decisions<\/span> that consider long-term impacts on global ecology and geopolitics.<\/p>\n

c) The treaty promotes compromise and invites broad participation,<\/span> making it a successful international agreement.<\/p>\n

9. Challenges:<\/strong> Despite its success, the treaty faces ongoing challenges due to environmental changes and human activities.<\/span><\/p>\n
