{"id":29706,"date":"2018-10-26T12:03:20","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T06:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=29706"},"modified":"2018-10-26T12:03:20","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T06:33:20","slug":"food-first","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/food-first\/","title":{"rendered":"Food first\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/food-first\/article23723045.ece\">Food first\u00a0<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is no substitute for hot-cooked mealsto address poor child nutrition<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attempts to commercialise<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tinkering with the existing national programme of providing hot-cooked meals to children three to six years old, and take-home rations for younger children and pregnant and lactating mothers is fraught with danger<\/li>\n<li>Attempts to substitute meals or rations with factory-made nutrients will inject commercialisation into a key mission, and upset the nutritional basis of the scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Anganwadi Services Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If it is to achieve better outcomes, it must focus on the provision of physical infrastructure and funding, besides closer monitoring of the nutrition mission<\/li>\n<li>Theoretically, the mission covers every child, but in practice it is not accessible to all.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>A long way to go<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Family Health Survey-4 shows a drop in underweight and stunted children under five years of age compared to the previous survey, but the absolute numbers are still high<\/li>\n<li>An estimated 35.7% children are underweight and 38.4% are stunted in that age group<\/li>\n<li>The body mass index of 22.9% women aged 15-49 indicates chronic energy deficiency.
