situation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What has happened?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) has been <\/span><b>revoked from Meghalaya<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> April<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Arunachal Pradesh, the impact of AFSPA has been <\/span><b>reduced to eight police stations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instead of 16 police stations<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is AFSPA?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AFSPA came into force due to rising insurgencies in the north-eastern states<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armed Forces Special Powers Act was introduced in 1958<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It gives armed forces the power to <\/span><b>maintain public order in \u201cdisturbed areas\u201d.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Gives armed forces the power to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kill anyone acting in contravention of law,<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrest and search any premises without a warrant<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide cover to forces from prosecution and legal suits without the Centre\u2019s sanction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>What is a \u2018disturbed area\u2019?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is declared by <\/span><b>notification under Section 3 of the AFSPA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An area can be disturbed due to disputes between members of different religious, racial, language or regional groups or castes or communities.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Who can declare a \u2018disturbed area\u2019?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central Government or the Governor of the state or administrator of UT<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Which states are\/had been under AFSPA?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Effective in the whole of Nagaland, Assam, Manipur (excluding seven assembly constituencies of Imphal) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Arunachal Pradesh it was in force in 16 police stations and in Tirap, Longding and Changlang districts bordering Assam<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Meghalaya,it was effective in a 20 km area along the Assam-Meghalaya border<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tripura withdrew the AFSPA in 2015<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jammu and Kashmir has a similar Act<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Changes in Protected Area Permit (PAP):<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 1958, all areas falling between the Inner line and the International Border of some States were declared as protected areas. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAP for foreigners visiting Manipur, Mizoram and Nagaland has been <\/span><b>relaxed<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PAP will be valid for five years with effect from 1<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">st<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> April<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, residents from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China <\/span><b>will not be allowed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to visit these
