{"id":29836,"date":"2018-10-26T12:40:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=29836"},"modified":"2018-10-26T12:40:05","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:10:05","slug":"limits-to-maximal-rhetoric","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/limits-to-maximal-rhetoric\/","title":{"rendered":"Limits to maximal rhetoric"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><u><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/limits-to-maximal-rhetoric\/article23640537.ece\">Limits to maximal rhetoric<\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India needs gender justice, not draconian laws<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the government has permitted people who wield power to defend rapists and obstruct due process, and while some of India\u2019s lawmakers are under a cloud, we have been presented with the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance, 2018, as a deterrence against the commission of rape<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex and Gender are two different constructs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sex<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women<\/li>\n<li>Aspects of sex will not vary substantially between different human societies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Gender<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviours, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women<\/li>\n<li>While aspects of gender may vary greatly<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Real cause of sexual violence<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is the lack of gender equality that leads to sexual violence, and not biological constructs<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attacking women journalists<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The law-enforcement system never really moves against the blatant misogyny of ruling party members<\/li>\n<li>But it misses no opportunity to move against women journalists who seek accountability from the ruling regime<\/li>\n<li>The term \u2018presstitute\u2019, popularised by a sitting Minister, is not only an insult but a call to instigate violence against women journalists<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><u>Example:<\/u> Based on a complaint by a self-styled organisation, the Hindu Sangathan, there is an FIR against journalist and cartoonist Swathi Vadlamudi for her stinging cartoon referring to the recent incidents of sexual assault<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The time has come to conduct gender-sensitive training workshops for those in power so that we are not left with draconian laws and no justice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Limits to maximal rhetoric Context India needs gender justice, not draconian laws What has happened?
