{"id":29837,"date":"2018-10-26T12:41:22","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:11:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=29837"},"modified":"2018-10-26T12:41:22","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:11:22","slug":"minorities-commission-to-seek-constitutional-status","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/minorities-commission-to-seek-constitutional-status\/","title":{"rendered":"Minorities\u2019 commission to seek constitutional status"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-national\/minorities-commission-to-seek-constitutional-status\/article23640593.ece\">Minorities\u2019 commission to seek constitutional status<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What has happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Commission for Minorities (NCM) has decided to approach the government for granting it Constitutional status to protect the rights of minority communities more effectively<\/p>\n<p><strong>Effect of granting constitutional status<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If granted such a status, the NCM will be able to act against errant officials who do not attend hearings, follow its order or are found guilty of dereliction of duty<\/li>\n<li>If granted constitutional status, the NCM can penalise or suspend an officer for two days or send him\/her to jail<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>NCST &amp; NCSC already have this status<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Only the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes enjoy constitutional status<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In its present form, the NCM has powers to summon officials, including chief secretaries and director generals of police, but has to rely on departments concerned to take action against them<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Standing Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment (2017-18), in its 53rd report noted that the NCM is \u201calmost ineffective\u201d in its current state to deal with cases of atrocities against minorities<\/li>\n<li>The committee recommended constitutional status to the body \u201cwithout any delay\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Minorities\u2019 commission to seek constitutional status What has happened?
