{"id":29840,"date":"2018-10-26T12:42:17","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:12:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=29840"},"modified":"2018-10-26T12:42:17","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:12:17","slug":"common-wealth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/common-wealth\/","title":{"rendered":"Common wealth?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/common-wealth\/article23640523.ece\">Common wealth?<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>CHOGM again failed to make a casefor its relevance in the 21st century<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commonwealth 2.0<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in London came with hopes of a \u201cre-energised Commonwealth\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Britain looking to revive the 53-nation grouping as Commonwealth 2.0, amidst Britain\u2019s rocky exit from the EU<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>India and CHOGM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After Manmohan Singh skipped the summits in Australia (2011) and Sri Lanka (2013) over bilateral differences, and Mr. Modi skipped the summit in Malta (2015) out of indifference<\/p>\n<p>So it was widely expected that India would step up to a bigger role, and help chart a future course for the Commonwealth<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reasons for the failure of CHOGM meet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Britain\u2019s tightening of visa rules: \u00a0<\/strong>Failed to convince most members of the Commonwealth that Britain would reverse its policies on immigration e.g. Windrush generation issue<\/p>\n<p><strong>Indian illegal immigrant issue:<\/strong> The U.K.\u2019s hard line on Indian \u201cillegals\u201d, which prevented the signing of a bilateral agreement on immigrant \u201creturns\u201d between Mr. Modi and Ms. May, too indicates that post-Brexit London is likely to welcome trade in goods from the Commonwealth, not services<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Commonwealth remains a great platform for development aid, democratic values and educational opportunities, but its relevance is unlikely to increase unless it adopts a more egalitarian and inclusive attitude to its next generation of Commonwealth citizens, to partake in a prosperity their forefathers built.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Common wealth?
