{"id":29921,"date":"2018-10-26T13:06:35","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:36:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=29921"},"modified":"2018-10-26T13:06:35","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T07:36:35","slug":"towards-a-regional-reset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/towards-a-regional-reset\/","title":{"rendered":"Towards a regional reset?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/towards-a-regional-reset\/article23565979.ece\"><strong>Towards a regional reset?<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bold moves to normalize ties with China and Pakistan will enhance India\u2019s standing<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flexibility with neighbors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Resetting ties with China<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Peaceful resolution to Doklam standoff<\/li>\n<li>Indian government also toned down the planned celebrations marking the anniversary of the Dalai Lama\u2019s arrival from Tibet<\/li>\n<li>New Delhi and Beijing have now embarked on a flurry of high-level visits that are meant to lead up to a summit meeting between the two leaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Issues on which both India and China can gain by working together<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For India: Chinese push in India\u2019s NSG bid<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China could remove its block to India\u2019s membership by adopting a more inclusive approach within the nuclear export control organisation<\/li>\n<li>Even if withdrawal of China\u2019s objections does not soften the objections of more hardline \u201cnon-proliferationists\u201d or Non-Proliferation Treaty-proponents, the goodwill from such a move would propel India-China relations forward.<strong style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>For China: Addressing Indian concerns on BRI<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Addressing India\u2019s three concerns: on territorial integrity, transparency of projects and their sustainability<\/li>\n<li>The solution to the first is contained in a proposal under consideration to extend the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to Afghanistan<\/li>\n<li>The shift from the CPEC to what could be called PACE or the Pakistan-Afghanistan-China Economic corridor would necessitate a shift away from projects in Gilgit-Baltistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir<\/li>\n<li>Those projects may still be built and funded by China, but then would not constitute a part of the BRI route; as a result, India\u2019s concerns on sovereignty could be dispensed with<\/li>\n<li>India could take the lead in creating an international template for infrastructure and connectivity proposals, one that would seek to engage China and other donor countries in a structured approach towards debt financing<\/li>\n<li>This would win India goodwill in the neighbourhood too, where every other country (apart from Bhutan) has signed on to the BRI, but has felt alienated by India\u2019s rigid opposition to the initiative.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>No interference in Maldives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indian government decided not to exert hard power in bringing Maldives President Abdulla Yameen around after he declared a state of emergency in the country<\/li>\n<li>Nor did it engage China in a confrontation when Mr. Yameen sought Beijing\u2019s support in this regard<\/li>\n<li>The government remained silent as Male went a step further and held discussions with Pakistan\u2019s Army Chief, Gen.
