{"id":30044,"date":"2018-10-26T13:32:36","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T08:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30044"},"modified":"2018-10-26T13:32:36","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T08:02:36","slug":"raja-mandala-indias-china-reset-and-bri","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/raja-mandala-indias-china-reset-and-bri\/","title":{"rendered":"Raja Mandala: India\u2019s China reset and\u00a0BRI"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/india-china-foreign-policy-trade-relations-xi-jinping-narendra-modi-doklam-5130866\/\"><strong>Raja Mandala: India\u2019s China reset and\u00a0BRI<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At the annual Boao forum in Hainan this week, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is expected to present himself as the new champion of globalisation and castigate the unilateral economic actions of US President Donald Trump<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>New economic leader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>China might project itself as new global economic leader amidst US\u2019s unilateralist policies<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>India doubtful on China\u2019s intentions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Trade deficit with China:<\/strong> Due to huge trade deficit with China, around $52 billion, and no efforts from Chinese side to reduce it despite Indian concerns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRI issues: <\/strong>China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the flagship project of the BRI, violates India\u2019s sovereignty in Kashmir. BRI projects are pushing recipient countries into indebtedness, do not transfer skills or technology and are environmentally unsustainable<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Indian efforts to promote connectivity with neighbors<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Chabahar port project in Iran and the agreement on building a rail link to Kathmandu<\/li>\n<li>India is also in discussion with Japan and the US to pool resources and coordinate approaches to sustainable infrastructure development in the Indo-Pacific<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Working jointly is beneficial for both India and China<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Improving viability:<\/strong> The viability of the projects would significantly improve if there is cooperation between India and China, for e.g.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The financing for China\u2019s hydroelectric projects in Nepal would be lot easier if the power plants are linked to North Indian markets<\/li>\n<li>Similarly, the proposed Indian and Chinese rail lines in Nepal would be more efficient if they are part of sensible trade and transit agreements between Delhi, Kathmandu and Beijing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Huge size of Indian market:<\/strong> The Subcontinent\u2019s geography and the size of India\u2019s market make it plain that many BRI projects will be hugely successful if India is part of them<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current stand<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>India: <\/strong>The NDA government might be quite open to a substantive dialogue with China on BRI if Xi is prepared to address Delhi\u2019s concerns on sovereignty and sustainability<\/p>\n<p><strong>China: <\/strong>Beijing, in turn, has apparently floated a number of new proposals for Delhi\u2019s consideration.These include extension of the CPEC to India, promoting connectivity across the Himalayas in J&amp;K, Nepal, Sikkim and other places.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is Boao forum (BFA)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Boao Forum for Asia\u00a0is a non-profit organisation that hosts high-level forums for leaders from government, business and academia in Asia and other continents to share their vision on the most pressing issues in this dynamic region and the world at large<\/p>\n<p><strong>Modelled after WEF: <\/strong>BFA is modelled on the\u00a0World Economic Forum\u00a0held annually in\u00a0Davos,\u00a0Switzerland<\/p>\n<p>Its fixed address is in\u00a0Bo&#8217;ao,\u00a0Hainan\u00a0province, China, although the Secretariat is based in\u00a0Beijing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Asian Davos:<\/strong> The forum, sometimes known as the \u201cAsian Davos\u201d, takes its name from the town of Boao, located in China\u2019s southern Hainan province, which has been the permanent venue for its annual conference since 2002.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum is committed to promoting regional economic integration and bringing Asian countries even closer to their development goals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Raja Mandala: India\u2019s China reset and\u00a0BRI \u00a0Context At the annual Boao forum in Hainan this week, Chinese leader Xi Jinping is expected to present himself as the new champion of globalisation and castigate the unilateral economic actions of US President Donald Trump \u00a0New economic leader China might project itself as new global economic leader amidst&hellip;
