A limbless amphibian, the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">striped caecilian<\/span> (Ichthyophis spp), has been discovered in Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 This marks the first recorded presence of the species in the 1,307.49 sq. km park.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 The discovery was made during a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">rapid herpetofauna survey<\/span> conducted from June 14-17.<\/p>\n<h2>About Caecilians<\/h2>\n<p>1. Limbless amphibians or caecilians\u00a0are a group of animals that belong to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gymnophiona order of the amphibian class<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>2. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Caecilians are limbless amphibians<\/span> that live mostly burrowed under soil, making them one of the least studied amphibian species.<\/p>\n<p>3. It is a National Park located in Assam.<br \/>\n2. It is situated on the banks of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Brahmaputra River<\/span> and lies between the Brahmaputra River and the Karbi (Mikir) Hills.<br \/>\n3. It is the\u00a0single largest undisturbed and representative area in the Brahmaputra Valley floodplain.<br \/>\n4. The area under wetlands in Kaziranga has reduced from 8.5% of the total area to 6.7% over a period of 30 years till 1977.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 210px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 22.3158%; height: 210px;\"><strong>Special Recognition<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 77.6842%; height: 210px;\">1. The Park was declared as a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">National Park in 1974<\/span>. In 1985, the park was designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Further, it was also declared as a Tiger Reserve in 2006.<br \/>\n2. It is also recognized as an Important Bird Area by Bird Life International for the conservation of avifaunal species.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 22.3158%; height: 30px;\"><strong>Vegetation<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 77.6842%; height: 30px;\">1. Due to the difference in altitude between the eastern and western areas of the park, here one can see mainly four types of vegetation\u2019.<br \/>\n2. This includes alluvial inundated grasslands, alluvial savanna woodlands, tropical moist mixed deciduous forests, and tropical semi-evergreen forests.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 22.3158%; height: 30px;\"><strong>Flora<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 77.6842%; height: 30px;\">Indian gooseberry, cotton tree, and elephant apple are amongst the famous trees that can be seen in the park. Also, a good variety of aquatic flora can be seen in lakes, ponds, and along the river shores.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 22.3158%; height: 30px;\"><strong>Fauna<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 77.6842%; height: 30px;\">Along with the iconic <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Greater one-horned rhinoceros<\/span>, the park is the breeding ground of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Over the time, the tiger population has also increased in Kaziranga, and that\u2019s the reason why it was declared as Tiger Reserve in 2006.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr style=\"height: 30px;\">\n<td style=\"width: 22.3158%; height: 30px;\"><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 77.6842%; height: 30px;\">1. It is the house of two-thirds of the world\u2019s <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">great one-horned rhinoceroses<\/span> (IUCN Status- Vulnerable).<br \/>\n2. The title <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Kaziranga adopts its name to Karbi<\/span>, which is the name of a woman who ruled here in ancient time.<br \/>\n3.
