As of now, around 140 GIBs and fewer than 1,000 Lesser Floricans are surviving in the wild.<\/p>\n<h2>Component of Plan-<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_302949\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-302949\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-302949\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Capture.png?resize=300%2C231&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Capture.png?resize=300%2C231&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/forumias.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Capture.png?w=337&amp;ssl=1 337w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-302949\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source-The Indian Express<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A)The first component includes targets like completing the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">conservation breeding centre<\/span> in Ramdevra, Jaisalmer, developing the Sorsan<a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/lesser-florican\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Lesser Florican<\/a> facility, preparing for releasing captive-bred birds, releasing <a href=\"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/the-great-indian-bustard\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Great Indian Bustards (GIBs)<\/a> in Rajasthan and other areas, monitoring them after release, and conducting <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">artificial insemination<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>B) The second component comprises in-situ conservation of GIBs in other range states such as <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.<\/span> This component will be implemented by <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WII along with state governments<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>C)From 2024 to 2026, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Wildlife Institute of India<\/span> will survey the population of Great Indian Bustards (GIBs) in Jaisalmer and other states where they live, and also estimate the population of the lesser florican across it<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">s entire range.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>D) During<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> the 2024-2029 phase,<\/span> there will be a focus on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">developing and implementing artificial insemination techniques<\/span> as a backup to captive-breeding conservation efforts. The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) has partnered with the Abu Dhabi-based International Fund for Houbara Conservation for this initiative.<\/p>\n<h2>Threats to Species<\/h2>\n<p>A) Both species have declined due to<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> hunting, habitat loss<\/span>, and<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> predators<\/span> preying on their eggs.<\/p>\n<p>B) <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Overhead power lines<\/span> have become a significant threat to Great Indian Bustards, with a study from 2017-18 estimating that 88,000 birds of various species die annually from collisions with these lines.<\/p>\n<p><strong>UPSC Syllabus<\/strong>-Species in News<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Source-This post on Bustard conservation Plan has been created based on the article &#8220;Rewilding, artificial insemination, population study; Rs 56 crore approved for next phase of Bustard conservation&#8221; published in &#8220;The Indian Express&#8221; on 1 July 2024.
