{"id":30305,"date":"2018-10-26T15:20:11","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T09:50:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30305"},"modified":"2018-10-26T15:20:11","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T09:50:11","slug":"a-thin-film-to-save-great-barrier-reef","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/a-thin-film-to-save-great-barrier-reef\/","title":{"rendered":"A thin film to save Great Barrier Reef"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-life\/a-thin-film-to-save-great-barrier-reef\/article23368240.ece\"><strong>A thin film to save Great Barrier Reef<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The World Heritage-listed site is reeling from coral bleaching due to warming sea temperatures<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has been done?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Biology have tested a floating \u201c<strong>sun shield<\/strong>\u201d <strong>made of calcium carbonate<\/strong> that has been shown to protect the reef from the effects of bleaching<\/p>\n<p><strong>How will the shield help?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shield is designed to sit on the surface of the water above the corals, rather than directly on the corals, to provide an effective barrier against the sun<\/p>\n<p><strong>Idea behind the shield<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The basic idea is that by reducing the amount of sunlight from reaching the corals in the first place, we can prevent them from becoming stressed which leads to bleaching<\/p>\n<p><strong>Can the shield be deployed over entire barrier reef area?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No. It will be deployed on a smaller, local level to protect high-value or high-risk areas of reef as the entire reef area is very large (348000sq km)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Backdrop<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In early 2016 the Great Barrier Reef suffered the worst bleaching yet, affecting an estimated 93 per cent of coral on its vast northern section and killing more than a fifth of it.
