{"id":30368,"date":"2018-10-26T15:35:01","date_gmt":"2018-10-26T10:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.forumias.com\/?p=30368"},"modified":"2018-10-26T15:35:01","modified_gmt":"2018-10-26T10:05:01","slug":"tibet-is-not-a-card","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/forumias.com\/blog\/tibet-is-not-a-card\/","title":{"rendered":"Tibet is not a card"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/todays-paper\/tp-opinion\/tibet-is-not-a-card\/article23338076.ece\"><strong>Tibet is not a card<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Context<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recent calling off major events of Tibetan community example, like cancellation of the 7th World Parliamentarian\u2019s Convention on Tibet (WPCT), which had been planned for April 26-28 in Delhi<\/p>\n<p><strong>Author\u2019s view<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>India shouldn\u2019t use Tibetan refugees in India as a card in its relations with China<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why using the Tibetan card is not a correct strategy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tibet had no role in deteriorating relations with China:<\/strong> Ties between New Delhi and Beijing have deteriorated over the past few years for a number of reasons unconnected to the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan population in India<\/li>\n<li><strong>Changing ground realities in Tibet<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Development of Tibetan cities: <\/strong>The landscape of Tibet, now crisscrossed with railway lines, super-speed highways, tunnels and airports, has changed drastically in the past two decades e.g. Beijing-Lhasa railway line, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) now sees many more such engineering marvels (albeit at the cost of its environment), and downtown Lhasa has all the trappings of a modern city<\/li>\n<li><strong>Demographic shift in Tibet (Increasing Chinese influence): <\/strong>With Beijing populating areas with majority \u2018Han\u2019 Chinese workers, encouraging mixed marriages, and mainstreaming Chinese culture into the region<\/li>\n<li><strong>Decreasing outflow of Tibetan refugees to India: <\/strong>The outflow of refugees from Tibet has been curtailed by the Chinese authorities over the last decade, mainly by convincing Nepal to close a popular route and the once bustling informal trade route between India and Tibet has also dried up<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Generations born in India unaware of situation in Tibet: <\/strong>New generations of Tibetans born in India are brought up as exiles, without a real sense of what Tibet may actually be like, should they ever return\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Weak relations with India: <\/strong>The government\u2019s attitude towards giving them citizenship has been stern, although it lost its case in the Delhi High Court (Namgyal Dolkar v.
