This was the Prime Minister\u2019s first visit to Austria and that of an Indian Prime Minister after 41 years. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">This year marks the 75th year of diplomatic relations between the two countries<\/span>. The Prime Minister\u2019s decision to travel to Vienna immediately after he met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow was significant, as Austria is a European country that is not a part of NATO.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 100%; border-collapse: collapse; background-color: #fcfcfc; border-style: solid;\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"width: 100%;\"><strong>Highlight of PM&#8217;s Visit to Austria<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a. Cooperation on climate action and sustainability-<\/strong> Both countries pledged to collaborate on renewable energy, with a <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">specific focus on Austria&#8217;s Hydrogen Strategy<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India&#8217;s Green Hydrogen Mission<\/span>. The main areas of Cooperation between India and Austria are explained below-<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Political Cooperation-<\/strong> The India Austria political relations have been strengthened by the high level political exchanges by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">heads of the states<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">ministerial level engagements and visits<\/span>, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">parliamentary level exchanges<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Economic Cooperation-<\/strong> India-Austria economic and commercial cooperation constitutes an important dimension of the bilateral relationship. The two sides have taken steps to strengthen and deepen bilateral economic cooperation.<br \/>\n<strong>a. Establishment of The Indo-Austrian Joint Economic Commission (JEC)-<\/strong>\u00a0 The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Indo-Austrian Joint Economic Commission<\/span> (<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">JEC<\/span>) was established in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1983<\/span>. It provides a forum for bilateral interaction between the governmental Ministries and Chambers of Commerce and Industry. There have been <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">more than 200 collaborations<\/span>, including <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">100 technical collaboration<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">60 joint ventures<\/span> between Indian and Austrian firms especially in the fields of steel, manufacturing technology, railway and transport, equipment and metallurgy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>b. Indo-Austria Bilateral Trade-<\/strong> In 2022, the bilateral trade is <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">USD 2.84 billion<\/span> with and increase on <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">14.97 %<\/span> over the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">2021 levels<\/span>. The <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">key Indian Investors in Austria<\/span> include Wipro Technologies, Shilpa Medicare, VA Tecg Wabag Ltd, KTM-Bajaj Auto. In December 2021, <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Indian Edutech company Byju\u2019s<\/span> acquired an Austrian start-up Geogebra for about USD 100 million.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Science and Technology Cooperation-<\/strong> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Austria\u2019s first two satellites<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">TUGSAT-1\/BRITE<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">UniBRITE<\/span> were launched by India\u2019s PSLV\u2013C20 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota on 2013. The two satellites are developed in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">collaboration<\/span> with the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Institute of Communication Networks and Satellite Communications<\/span> (IKS) at the Technical University of Graz (TUG), <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Institute for Astronomy of the University of Vienna<\/span>, and the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Space Flight Lab<\/span> (SFL) at the University of Toronto Institute Of Aerospace Studies (UTIAS).<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Cultural Cooperation- <\/strong>The Indo-Austrian cultural relations have a long tradition dating back to 16th century when Balthasar Springer traveled from Tyrol in 1505 to India along with the third Portuguese fleet.<br \/>\n<strong>a. Visit of Rabindranath Tagore-<\/strong> The visit of India\u2019s philosopher-poet and Nobel Laureate <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Rabindranath Tagore<\/span> twice to Vienna \u2013 in <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1921<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">1926<\/span> was one of the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">crucial bridges<\/span> of <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">cultural<\/span> and<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> intellectual<\/span> <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">exchange<\/span> between <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">India<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Austria<\/span>. Gurudev\u2019s famous lecture in 1921 \u2018<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">The religion of the forest<\/span>\u2019, portrayed the value of getting closer to nature and learning union and compassion.<br \/>\n<strong>b. Contemporary Indian Culture-<\/strong> There is a lot of interest in contemporary Indian literature and theater. <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Ayurveda<\/span>, the Indian <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">traditional system of medicine<\/span> has been widely acknowledged and practiced in Austria. The holistic approach of Yoga in health care and well being has led many Austrians to embrace Yoga and is testified by the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">presence of many Yoga schools in Vienna and other Austrian cities<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Diaspora Connection-<\/strong> There are an estimated over<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"> 31,000 Indians<\/span> (majority from Kerala and Punjab) living in Austria. Shared Global Perspectives-<\/strong> Both countries\u2019 have adopted balanced approaches to the <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Russia-Ukraine conflict<\/span>, maintaining <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">diplomatic<\/span> and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">commercial relations<\/span> amidst global tensions.
