Why in the news?<\/h2>\n

Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) recently discovered a new species of deep-water dogfish shark<\/span> named Squalus hima. This discovery was made at a fishing harbor in Kerala along the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n

About<\/strong><\/td>\nSqualus hima is a new species of dogfish shark found off the southwest coast of India. It inhabits deep-water regions along the Arabian Sea<\/span>.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Distribution<\/strong><\/td>\nAlong the southwest coast of India, two species of Squalus are known to exist. The discovery of Squalus hima adds to the diversity of dogfish sharks in this region.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Distinguishing Features<\/strong><\/td>\n1. The genus Squalus, to which Squalus hima belongs, is part of the family Squalidae, commonly known as spurdogs.
\n2. These sharks are characterized by their smooth dorsal fin spines, angular short snouts, small mouths almost as wide as their snouts, first dorsal fin origins located behind the pectoral fins, and bodies without any spots.
\n3. The distinguishing features of Squalus hima to Squalus lalannei<\/strong> include the number of precaudal vertebrae, the total vertebrae count, the teeth count, the trunk and head heights, and the structure and color of the fins.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
Uses<\/strong><\/td>\n1. Species of the Squalus genus are exploited for their liver oil, which contains high levels of squalene<\/span> (or squalane when processed).
\n2. This substance is in high demand in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly for manufacturing high-end cosmetic and anti-cancerous products.<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
